As we wave our last goodbyes to the summer weather and start to feel that nip in the morning air, there’s a lot to look forward to. With this decided change, the new season brings us pleasant chocolate surprises dotted around living rooms, bedrooms and backyards. Then there are the delighted screams of little ankle-biters hunting for chocolate eggs, the odd willing participant donning a furry white suit, and if you’re lucky – the opportunity to unwind and spend time with family and friends. The moon will also be celebrating with us, playing a little hide-and-seek over the long weekend as it momentarily slips behind earth’s shadow. The eclipse will be on show on Saturday night the 4th of April, beginning slowly at 9:15pm.
Sneaky Symbolism
A number of Easter ‘traditions’ have actually snuck in from some strange places throughout history. Here’s a quick peek:
- The Easter Bunny: German immigrants may have introduced their mythical ‘egg-laying’ hare to America in the 1700s. Children laid out nests for them to lay their coloured eggs in.
- Decorating eggs: this tradition seems to go right back to the 1200s. Eggs might have been painted to mark the end of the Lenten season, when fasting had ended and people were then permitted to eat eggs again.
- The Easter Parade: began as a tradition of high-society in the 1800s, when people would don their fresh spring clothing and hats. This peaked around 1948 with the hit Fred Astaire/Judy Garland film Easter Parade.
